Wireless Earbuds Showdown: AirPods Pro vs Sony WF-1000XM5

The Flagship Earbud Battle

Apple and Sony represent opposite approaches to premium wireless earbuds. Apple optimizes for seamless ecosystem integration; Sony chases audiophile-grade sound and industry-leading noise cancellation.

We wore both daily for six weeks — commuting, working, exercising, and traveling.

Noise Cancellation

Sony WF-1000XM5 wins. Sony's integrated processor and redesigned driver deliver noticeably deeper silence on flights and in open offices. Apple's Adaptive Audio is excellent but doesn't quite match Sony at the extremes.

Sound Quality

Sony edges ahead for most genres. The XM5s produce richer bass and wider soundstage. AirPods Pro sound clean and balanced but slightly lean in comparison.

However, AirPods Pro with Apple Music's Spatial Audio creates an immersive experience that Sony can't replicate within the Apple ecosystem.

Comfort & Fit

AirPods Pro are lighter and the silicone tips fit a wider range of ear shapes out of the box. Sony includes four tip sizes but the bud body is slightly bulkier.

Ecosystem Integration

AirPods Pro dominates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. Instant pairing, device switching, and Find My integration are unmatched. Sony's multipoint connection works well but feels less polished.

Battery Life

Both deliver 6 hours with ANC enabled. Sony's case provides two additional full charges; Apple's case is more compact but offers similar total playtime.

• Android users and audiophiles: Sony WF-1000XM5
